A reference point
Ofgem uses typical domestic consumption values to compare tariffs. For a medium-use home with a standard electricity meter, this has been around 2,700 kWh a year. It's a reference, not a target — many homes use much more or less.
What changes usage
- Number of people in the home.
- Electric heating, hot water or an electric shower.
- Working from home.
- Appliance age and efficiency.
- Electric vehicle charging.
Finding your own figure
Your bill or online account shows how many kWh you've used. A smart meter display can show daily usage. Enter that figure into the calculator for an estimate based on your tariff.
