What is a kWh?

A kilowatt-hour (kWh) is a unit of energy. It's the amount used by something drawing 1,000 watts for one hour — for example, a 1 kW heater left on for an hour, or a 100 W TV running for 10 hours.

Your electricity supplier charges a price for every kWh you use. This is called the unit rate and is usually shown in pence.

Where to find your price per kWh

Look on your latest bill, your supplier's app or your online account. If you're on a time-of-use tariff you may have more than one rate; try each one to compare. Learn more in our guide: What is a kWh?
