Dehumidifier Electricity Cost

Calculate how much a dehumidifier costs to run per day and per month — handy if you're drying laundry indoors or tackling damp.

watts (W)

Example: 250 W. Example for a compressor dehumidifier. Desiccant models often use more power but work better in cold rooms.

Estimated cost to run your dehumidifier

£0.50per day used

Uses 2 kWh on each day it's used (250 W × 8 h).

Per hour of use£0.060.25 kWh
Per week£3.5014 kWh
Per month£15.2160.8 kWh
Per year£182.50730 kWh

How it works: cost = power (kW) × hours used × price per kWh. Standing charges aren't included because you pay them whether or not the appliance is on.

Estimates only. Real consumption depends on the model, settings and how the appliance is used.

How dehumidifier electricity use is measured

Dehumidifiers list their power in watts. Compressor models are usually efficient in warmer rooms; desiccant models use a heater and often draw more, but perform better in cold spaces.

How to calculate your dehumidifier running cost

Cost = power (kW) × hours used × price per kWh

Example only: at 250 W for 8 hours, a dehumidifier would use about 2 kWh, costing around £0.50 at 25p per kWh. Used 7 days a week, that's roughly 730 kWh and £182.50 a year. Your own figures may be quite different.

Why actual usage varies

  • Compressor or desiccant type.
  • Room temperature and humidity.
  • Humidistat setting — it switches off once the target is reached.
  • Hours used.

Ways to reduce the cost

  • Close doors and windows in the room you're drying.
  • Set a sensible target humidity.
  • Use laundry mode for drying clothes.
